S.A.L.T. Servathon
Serve Generously, Give Joyfully & Pray
The SALT Servathon is an expression of what we value highly at RLCA, developing Christian character through service and philanthropy. SALT – Serving and Learning Together – provides the opportunity for students to learn about the needs in the community and also to be Christ’s hands and feet towards meeting the needs. Each year, RLCA will suspend its normal school day and students serve the community instead. RLCA’s SALT Servathon will mobilize over 700 students, teachers, and parent volunteers who will donate approximately 3,500 service hours to the community at a dozen non-profit organizations throughout Central Florida.
During the SALT Servathon each grade is assigned its own project for the day where they are able to learn about an area of need in the community and experience how serving others really can make a difference in the world. Examples of service opportunities include: sorting and stocking shelves at local food pantries, cleaning local parks, planting gardens with artistic children, making seniors smile at retirement homes, packing over 1,000 meals for hungry children around the world, taking mentally handicapped adults on a bowling outing and making Teddy Bears for emergency first responders to tale to children who have been in an accident. It’s a day of hard work and heart change, blessing others, and being blessed.
SALT is also an important philanthropic effort and encourages a culture of giving. Instead of selling wrapping paper or walking a 5K to raise money, we ask students to seek pledges. Prior to SALT day, they reach out to family, friends, and neighbors to ask for a pledge for their day of service. Donations generate critical funds for the academy’s various needs fulfilling RLCA’s value: to make Christ-centered education affordable to families that wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend RLCA. SALT has the potential to raise 100,000 on Feb 22 and 23.
Some examples of places we will serve in the past include but are not limited to, The HOPE center, The Benton House, Dreamplex, Building Blocks, and South Lake Hospital.
